2019 Farm Progress Show To Host Soil Judging Contest For Illinois And Indiana FFA Students

ILLINOIS AND INDIANA FFA STUDENTS HAVE A CHANCE TO DEMONSTRATE THEIR SOILS JUDGING SKILLS AND WIN SOME CASH PRIZES AT THE SOIL JUDGING CONTEST AT THE 2019 FARM PROGRESS SHOW THAT WILL BE HELD IN DECATUR, ILLINOIS. The 2019 Farm Progress Show will host a competitive soil judging contest for Illinois and Indiana FFA chapters at its show site near Decatur, IL. The contest will be held Tuesday, August 27, the first day of the show. The 2019 show dates are August 27, 28 and 29. FFA chapter advisors should pre-register their teams with the form posted on the show website, FarmProgressShow.com. Deadline for team registration is Aug. 14.

Cash Prizes For Each State's Winners
Farm Credit Mid-America and Farm Credit Illinois are the major sponsors of the contest and provide a total of $2,000 in monetary awards. Winners will be chosen and prizes given for each state, as follows:

  • Judging Rules and Officials
    Contest officials include Purdue Cooperative Extension Service, University of Illinois Extension and NRCS. The contest will begin at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 27, and conclude by mid-day. Teams go through the pits at their own pace. Awards will be presented at 2:00 p.m. All official judges' decisions are final.

    The contest pits will be available for practice purposes on Wednesday, August 28 and Thursday, August 29. Official results from Tuesday's contest will be posted.

    There is no entry fee in return for chapter advisors' help to facilitate the contest. Standard show admission is required, $20 for adults, and $10 for ages 13-17.

    Contest guidelines vary by state and more details are available on the show website. The latest soils judging guidelines will be followed and the contest will be educational in preparation for other FFA soils contests, held later in the fall.
